The best quality was the Mysore sandalwood variety from India, nowadays teetering on the brink of extinction from the world of perfumery due to the lack of natural material (the species is protected from harvesting because it is an endangered species).
Australian sandalwood and New Caledonian sandalwood are different species with a stronger scent.
